A smart
watch, is a computerized wristwatch with functionality that is
enhanced beyond timekeeping, and is often comparable to a personal digital
assistant (PDA) device. While early models can perform basic tasks, such
as calculations, translations, and game-playing, modern smart
watches are effectively wearable computers. Many smart watches
run mobile apps, while a smaller number of models run a mobile
operating system and function as portable media players, offering
playback of FM radio, audio, and video files to the user via
a Bluetooth headset. Some smart phone models, (also called watch
phones) feature full mobile phone capability, and can make or answer
phone calls.
Such devices
may include features such as barometer, compass, chronograph, calculator, cell
phone, touch screen, GPS navigation, Map display, graphical
display, speaker, scheduler, watch, SD cards that are
recognized as a mass storage device by a computer,
and rechargeable battery. It may communicate with a wireless
headset, heads-up display, insulin pump, microphone, modem,
or other devices. Some also have "sport watch" functionality
with activity tracker features (also known as "fitness
tracker") as seen in GPS watches made for Training, Diving,
and Outdoor sports. Functions may include training programs (such as
intervals), Lap times, speed display, GPS tracking unit, Route tracking,
dive computer, heart rate
monitor compatibility, Cadence sensor compatibility, and
compatibility with sport transitions. Like other computers, a smart watch
may collect information from internal or external sensors. It may control, or
retrieve data from other instruments or computers. It may support wireless
technologies like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS. However, it is possible
a "wristwatch computer" may just serve as a front end for a remote
system, as in the case of watches utilizing cellular technology or Wi-Fi.
Samsung was the first to enter the market with the Samsung SPH-WP10 watch phone
on March 31, 1999. This was the world’s first CDMA-based watch phone. That was
14 years ago, and the mobile phone industry has evolved a lot since
then. It might raise an eyebrow thinking why the watch phone didn’t evolve
and become a wearable gadget that everyone carries on his wrist. Nevertheless,
you might ask yourself what are the advantages of a smart watch? We
already have Smart phones so why do we need another device and what are
the advantages of a smart watch device.
Following are the advantages
Portability –
It’s a wristwatch, you can carry this device everywhere you go, even to the
pool if it’s waterproof.
Quick access –
easy to view important notifications without taking the phone out of your
pocket or bag.
Extends your
phone’s functionality – choose from a large variety of installable apps.
Monitor / Filter
incoming calls by the caller ID
Read Facebook
and Twitter messages, reply only to important messages that needs your
attention.
To read
incoming email messages, discard those who are not important.
Easy to manage
a busy schedule.
Listen to Radio
/ Internet radio.
Protected
against theft (unless someone is an expert in stealing wristwatches).
Remote control
your phone / tablet functionality – e.g. Changing music track on your phone.
Everything that
have some disadvantages too so now lets discuss the disadvantages of smart
watch..
Following are the disadvantages:
Currently,
most smart watches aren’t standalone devices, and there for you still need a
smart phone to make the most of it. Because of this, owning a smart watch means
you have another device to pay for, charge, and take care of. For some this
isn’t a big deal, but for others these things are real drawbacks.
Another
potential problem with many smart watches today is the fact that a lot of them
aren’t exactly the most stylish things on the planet. It’s true that companies
are improving on this as time goes on, but many smart watches still look like
toys strapped to your wrist.
As the smart
watch industry continues to grow and more products are released, we are sure to
see that list of disadvantages shrink and the list of advantages grow. In the
meantime, it is important to consider whether buying a smart watch is right for
you. What’s right for someone else certainly might not be right for you. If the
technology is used for the betterment of the humanity it would be very
helpful.. But the access use of technology is not good for anyone…
